Hizo sus estudios superiores en Roma. Se doctoró en ambos derechos, y su carrera eclesiástica estuvo orientada hacia cargos relacionados con estos estudios.<br /> <br /> Desempeñó importantes cargos en la Curia Romana. En [[1720]] era el rector de la universidad La Sapienza de Roma. En [[1724]], sin ser sacerdote aún, fue nombrado arzobispo titular de Teodosia. En [[1726]] fue creado cardenal in pectore, y la noticia se hizo pública en [[1738]]. En [[1727]] fue nombrado obispo de Ancona, y en [[1731]] arzobispo de Bolonia.<br /> <br /> En [[1740]] fue elegido Papa. Ya antes había hecho lo posible por avanzar el proceso de canonización de S. José de Calasanz.
