Desde [[1628]] hasta su muerte estuvo al cargo del gobierno de Toscana. Tuvo por ello mucha relación con los escolapios, a los que recibió y protegió en su ducado. Cuando surgieron dificultades a causa del P. Mario, nombrado Provincial de Toscana por el Santo Oficio, siempre estuvo al lado de Calasanz, e incluso hizo todo lo posible para defender la Orden y protegerla en los tiempos de la reducción. Intervino también tras la muerte de Inocencio X para conseguir su restauración.<br />

Los escolapios llegaron a Florencia en [[1630]], cuando el sacerdote Juan Francisco Fiamelli (antiguo colaborador de Calasanz en Roma) ofreció a los escolapios unas “escuelas pías” que había fundado en la ciudad. El Gran Duque admitió a los escolapios para hacerse cargo de la escuela. Más tarde, en [[1633]], como el edificio se quedaba pequeño, el Gran Duque les ofreció otra casa, junto a la iglesia de Santa María dei Ricci, al que se trasladaron, y en el que estuvieron hasta [[1777]], fecha en la que permutaron el colegio por el de San Giovannino.<br />

Como hacía falta una casa noviciado, se pidió ayuda al Gran Duque, quien ofreció una villa en [[1638]], que se convirtió en casa de formación. Más tarde se construyó también allí un colegio, del Pellegrino. Hoy día los escolapios conservan solamente la iglesia.<br />

Todavía en [[1641]] ofreció el Gran Duque otra fundación en Pisa. Esta casa fue una fuente de tensiones con el P. Mario Sozzi y el santo Oficio. En [[1656]] se produjeron dificultades entre los religiosos que habitaban la casa, por lo que los superiores decidieron abandonarla.<br />
