Alessandro Ludovisi era hijo del conde Pompeo Ludovisi y de Camilla Bianchini. Estudió filosofía y teología en el Colegio Romano. En [[1575]] se doctoró en ambos derechos en Bolonia.<br />

Regresó ese mismo año a Roma y desempeñó diversos cargos jurídicos al servicio de los Papas. Paulo V lo nombró en [[1612]] arzobispo de Bolonia, y en [[1618]], Cardenal, con el título de Santa María in Traspontina.<br />

A la muerte de Paulo V en [[1621]] fue elegido Papa. Erudito y reformador, procedió a la canonización, entre otros, de Santa Teresa de Jesús, San Francisco Javier, San Ignacio de Loyola y S. Felipe Neri. En [[1622]] fundó la Congregación de Propaganda Fide. Procuró limitar la influencia de los reyes católicos en la elección de los Papas.<br />

Su pontificado sólo duró dos años y cinco meses, pero en ese tiempo favoreció notablemente a los escolapios. Parece que Calasanz conoció personalmente al cardenal Ludovisi en Narni, en alguno de sus viajes a Roma. Caputi y Berro dicen que le predijo, cuando iba camino del cónclave, que sería elegido Papa. Una vez elegido, Calasanz pidió que la Congregación de votos simples fuera elevada a la categoría de Orden religiosa con votos solemnes. Gregorio XV encomendó el estudio del asunto al cardenal Michelangelo Tonti, que en principio se mostraba contrario a la idea, pero luego, tras recibir el célebre Memorial de Calasanz, no sólo cambió de opinión, sino que además se convirtió en bienhechor de las Escuelas Pías. Gregorio XV, por el breve elevó la Congregación a Orden. Más tarde, a petición del mismo Calasanz, concedió a la Orden los privilegios de las Órdenes Mendicantes (lo cual era una excepción entre los Clérigos Regulares, categoría a la que pertenecían las Escuelas Pías.<br />
