Su padre era de origen español. Estudio derecho. Su tío paterno, arzobispo de Monreale en Sicilia, en [[1574]] lo nombró vicario general de la diócesis, de la que sería él mismo nombrado arzobispo en [[1588]]. Paulo V lo nombró Cardenal con el título de San Pancracio en [[1606]]. Cuando Calasanz pidió a Paulo V un Cardenal Protector para defender a las Escuelas Pías de los ataques de que eran objeto (por parte de los maestros rionales y profesores de la Sapienza, entre otros), el Papa nombró al Cardenal Torres, con un breve fechado el 24 de marzo de [[1607]].<br />

Calasanz le escribió una carta agradeciendo su disponibilidad, y alabando a importancia de la educación. La Publica BARTLIK en sus Anales (año [[1607]]), aunque GINER ([[1992]]) pone en duda su autenticidad.<br />

Se refiere también a él una anécdota calasancia: estaba un día Calasanz cuidando del borriquillo junto a un hermano. Lo observó el Cardenal Torres, y sorprendido por la humildad de Calasanz, le preguntó qué estaba haciendo. Calasanz le respondió que estaba enseñando al hermano a cuidar del borriquillo (Giner, [[1992]], pág. 566).<br />

Falleció el 8 (o el 9) de julio de [[1609]]. De él escribe BARTLIK: “Hombre distinguido entre otras cosas por el estudio de la Religión, la integridad de vida, el candor de ánimo, la suavidad de costumbres, el uso y experiencia de las cosas, y su benevolencia para con todos. Hombre que trató admirablemente con el Cardenal Baronio fallecido antes que él, y que juzgó digno el conjunto de sus escritos, antes de que fueran imprimidos y valorados. Hombre que ilustró su afecto a la Santísima Virgen con el testimonio de muchos discursos sobre la antífona Salve Regina. Hombre que no palidecía al llevar como príncipe purpurado el Santísimo Sacramento a los enfermos. Hombre que fue muy generoso con los pobres, por cuya virtud favoreció a las Escuelas Pías con una limosna mensual de 10 escudos, y un legado de cien. ¡Viva por siempre en la gloria!”<br />
