Hábil en la controversia, se valió del pulpito y de la prensa para oponerse a los ideales liberales que por aquel entonces tenían momentos de auge en Andalucía. Enseñó en El Escorial y en Sevilla; aquí sale en defensa de los intereses sociales amenazados por las nuevas ideas en los tiempos que surgieron al destronamiento de Isabel II. Pasó a Getafe y desde allí fue destinado a la fundación de Tucumán, única que quedaba de la llamada Escuela Pía sudamericana. A los meses de llegar tuvo que ser cerrado dicho colegio, pero al regresar estableció las bases de la fundación de Buenos Aires ([[1887]]). Volvió a España como profesor de griego de los júniores de San Pedro de Cárdena. Al abrirse en [[1890]] el colegio de Concepción fue destinado al mismo sobresaliendo en sus clases de ciencias naturales pero mucho más con sus polémicos artículos en defensa de la religión y de España, vilipendiadas en la prensa de Concepción, lo que atrajo sobre él y el colegio las iras de la prensa masónica.
